Travancore-Cochin KM#92

Another large set of Nagercoil District overprints occurs on Travancore-Cochin KM#92, the magenta 1 rupee court fee. ND#34 and 35 show the violet handstamped "STATE / OF / MADRAS" overprint (3 lines), the first on KM#92 perf 11 and the second on perf 12½. ND#36 and 37 show violet handstamped "STATE OF MADRAS." (one line with borders above and below), the first on KM#92 perf 11 and the second on perf 12½. The remaining stamps in this series illustrate settings of the black typographed "STATE OF / MADRAS" in two lines. These settings occur on various perf varieties as follows:

  1st setting 2nd setting 3rd setting
KM#92, perf.11 ND#38 ND#41,421,512 ND#46,473,512
KM#92, perf.12 ND#39 ND#43 ND#484
KM#92, perf.12½ ND#401 ND#44,453 ND#49,503

1 ND#41 and 42 are identical in terms of overprint setting and perf variety. ND#42 shows an additional violet handstamp—"NAGERCOIL DISTRICT COURT VENDOR"—our first direct evidence of use in Nagercoil. This additional overprint is also shown on ND#40.

2 ND#51 is a pair which provides a small clue about the occurance of settings within the overall sheet printing. On this perf 11 pair, the left overprint is in the 3rd setting and the right overprint is in the 2nd setting.

3 Three pairs of stamps are of the same combination of overprint setting and perf variety—ND#44 and 45, 46 and 47, 49 and 50. These pairs simply illustrate the wide variety of KM#92 shades that can be found.

4 ND#48 illustrates yet another handstamp—a large oval that reads "SUB-COURT" across the top, an unidentified city or town across the bottom, and the date "4 APR 1959" in the center.

Travancore-Cochin KM#93

Travancore-Cochin KM#93 is a 2 rupee court fee in carmine. ND#53 shows the three-line "STATE / OF / MADRAS" violet handstamp. The other six are variations of the two-line "STATE OF / MADRAS" typographed overprint in black, as follows:

  1st setting 2nd setting 3rd setting
KM#93, perf.12 ND#54 ND#56 ND#58
KM#93, perf.12½ ND#55 ND#57 ND#59

Travancore KM#451/Travancore-Cochin KM#505

Travancore KM#451, 1 anna red, is the only known revenue adhesive overprinted for use in Nagercoil during this period. Travancore-Cochin KM#505 refers to the "T.-C." overprint. The three stamps in this set show two settings of the two-line "STATE OF / MADRAS" overprint on two perf varieties, as follows:

  2nd setting 3rd setting
KM#505, perf.12½ ND#60 ND#61
KM#505, perf.13   ND#62

The large image at the top of this article is ND#62.
