The Overprint Types
Within each group the overprints are listed in descending order of the length of the inscription, regardless of any frame or final stop. The dimensions of the frame, if present, are also given. In the cases of text with both upper and lower case letters, the height of the upper case letter(s) is given first, followed by the height of the lower case letters in parentheses. In English inscriptions ascenders and descenders are ignored; thus the measurement of "Rajasthan" would indicate the height of the "R" followed by the height (in parentheses) of the "a", "s" or "n", not the "j", "t" or "h". In Hindi inscriptions the height is that of the longest letter, which may not be the same letter in different overprints. Some rounding up or down has been done. As full stops (periods) are often difficult to see, all measurements exclude full stops even when they are clear. They are, however, useful for identification of overprint types, and have been mentioned in passing. In the case of handstamps some degree of distortion takes place, depending on the severity of the strike, the surface it is on and how long it has been in use. It is also possible that some handstamps were made up from individual letters which may shift with time and account for small discrepancies in length between different samples of the same overprint. Measurements should therefore be used only as an approximate guide. In some cases the measurement of the handstamped examples may vary by up to 1 mm because of the spread of the ink into the paper.
The range of colours recorded for each overprint is indicated below, but for each stamp or stamped paper type only the confirmed colours are shown. If no colour has yet been confirmed, black or violet have been entered as default values for typographed and handstamped overprints respectively. I have not attempted to be exact about the shade of ink used for handstamps. "Violet" is not the violet of the philatelic colour charts, but represents various shades between red and blue.
All overprints are handstamped unless "typographed" is indicated. For convenience of reference the overprints in English [E] are listed together, followed by the overprints in Hindi [H]. Each group is subdivided into overprints consisting only of text (usually the single word "Rajasthan") [EA, HA] and overprints enclosed on two or four sides by a "frame" (usually rectangular but sometimes circular, oval, key-shaped or consisting of parentheses). The inscriptions, in English or Hindi (Devanagari) script are assigned a lower case letter as follows:

Below each overprint type is listed the types of fiscal adhesive stamp and stamped paper on which it has been found. It has not been possible to differentiate between 1948 or 1953 (CF2a or b), and 1957 or 1958 (CF3 a or b) issues of Republican court fee adhesives (which differ only in watermark) when they are attached to documents. These are arbitrarily listed as CF2 (1948 aggregate) or CF3 (1958 aggregate). When stamps off paper have been examined, they are separately listed under the appropriate code.
Overprints for Rajasthan Drought Relief and Refugee Relief are not included here, but I am preparing information about these issues for the next edition of the PSR.

Note: Brinkley notes in his 3rd supplement that this type has a "blob" at each end of the overprint which resemble, and may even be, speech marks. His measurement may include these as, after checking many examples, I conclude the length of the inscription excluding the "blobs" is as now given.

47 × 6 mm
Note: In this overprint the individual letters are widely spaced.
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa1B |
44 × 9.5 mm
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa1C |
38 × 31 mm
Note: I have seen three examples of this unusual overprint, none of which is complete. All were used in the district of Sikar and Jhunjhunu in 1974. As far as I can make it out the design consists of a central figure, probably the Ashokan capital, with the word "Rajasthan", 15 × 3 mm, repeated at each corner, slightly inclined towards the centre.
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa1D |
35 × 6.5 mm
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa1E |
c. 32 × 6 mm
Note: On the revenues this overprint extends across three stamps, so each bears only part of the word; "Raja" is 14 mm long, compared with 13 mm in type HAa3 which resembles it.
Colour: violet. On adhesives: Republican RV5A revenues. |
| HAa1 |
31 × 8 mm
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Jaipur type 10. |
| HAa2 |
Typographed, 30 × 6 mm (Brinkley T2a)
Note: Possibly more than one type included here, as dimensions seem to vary from 28 × 5 mm to 30 × 6.5 mm
Colour: black, red. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican copying fees and court fees. On stamped papers: Imperial revenues
. |
| HAa3 |
29 × 7 mm, letters upright (Brinkley H6a)
Note: Worn examples of this type may show a line below the inscription, due to inking of the edge of the handstamp. As with the typographed overprint (HAa2), more than one type may be included here as the length varies from 29 to 31 mm. Because the strikes are often incomplete these varieties cannot easily be distinguished. I have arbitrarily placed overprints 7mm high here and those 8mm high at HAa1, which measures fractionally over 31 × 8 mm.
Colour: black, violet. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CC3 copying fees, CF2, CF3 and CF5 court fees. On stamped papers: Jodhpur type 65, Imperial court fees and revenues, Republican copying fees and revenues. |
| HAa3a |
29 × 6.5 mm, letters slope slightly forwards
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Imperial revenues. |
| HAa3b |
24.5 × 3.5 mm
Colour: black. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa3c |
23.5 × 5 mm
Note: This and the next three types have a very similar general appearance; here the inscription slopes to the right, so the "a"s do not meet the connecting bar at right angles, and the "r" and "j" are narrower than in HAa4.
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa4 |
23 × 6 mm
Note: Here the inscription is upright, so the "a"s meet the connecting bar at right angles; the letters are somewhat thick. My length measurement is average as the overprint tends to be slightly longer on the Imperial stamped papers.
Colour: violet. On adhesives: Republican CC2 and CC3 copying fees, CF2 court fees. On stamped papers: Imperial court fees, Republican copying fees and revenues. |
| HAa5 |
Typographed, italic font, 23 × 5 mm (Brinkley T2b, as 23 × 4 mm)
Note: My measurement is from the stamped papers; it is possible that the overprint on the provisional court fees is different.
Colour: black. On adhesives: Republican CF4 court fees. On stamped papers: Jaipur copying fees ovpt.ed on revenues type 25, Republican copying fees ovpt.ed on revenues type SPCC4A. |
| HAa5a |
23 × 4.5 mm
Note: Similar to HAa5 with thin well-formed letters which, when in black, look almost typographed; the "a"s slope slightly, giving this overprint an "italic" look.
Colour: black, violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues.
|
| HAa5b |
23 × 4.5 mm
Note: I have seen only two blurred examples of this type, both from Jaipur 1979, but its short thick letters distinguish it from other types of similar dimensions.
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues.
|
| HAa6 |
20 × 4.5 mm
Note: More than one type may be included here, varying between 20 and 21.5 mm in length, but I have not found any constant characters to distinguish them. The apparent difference may be due to no more than shifting of individual letters.
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Imperial court fees, Republican copying fees and revenues. |
| HAa7 |
18 × 5 mm (Brinkley H6b)
Colour: black, violet. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CF3 and CF5 court fees. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa8 |
Typographed, 18 × 4 mm (Brinkley T2c)
Colour: black. On adhesives: Republican CF4 court fees. On stamped papers: Republican revenues overprinted as provisionals . |
| HAa9 |
17 × 3.5 mm (Brinkley H6c)
Note: The small "blobs" at each end of this type, noted by Brinkley, are speech marks; a similar type lacking these is HAa9a.
Colour: violet. On adhesives: Republican 1948 CC2 copying fees and CF2 court fees. |
| HAa9a |
17 × 3.5 mm
Note: This type is most easily distinguished from HAa9 by the lack of speech marks. I suspect more than one type may be included here but they cannot be separated until better material is available.
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HAa10 |
Typographed, 16 × 3 mm (Brinkley T2d, as 15 × 3 mm)
Note: There has been confusion between this type and HAa12. K&M give 16 mm and 15 mm for their respective lengths, while Brinkley notes his measurements are 15 mm and 14 mm. I have seen only one type, 15 mm long, and placed these in HAa12 in the first edition of this catalogue, believing that the red (or carmine) colour occurred only in the smaller type. Having now seen and measured more material I have transferred all examples in my collection to HAa10, leaving only the examples specifically cited by K&M and Brinkley as HAa12. Further information on the smaller type would be welcomed.
Colour: black, crimson, red. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CF2 court fees.
15.5 × 3 mm
See note above at HAa1C (38 × 31 mm). |
| HAa11 |
15 × 4 mm
Colour: violet. On adhesives: Republican CF5 court fees. |
| HAa12 |
Typographed, 15 × 2.5 mm (Brinkley T2e, as 14 × 2.5 mm)
See note above at HAa10.
Colour: black, blue, red. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CF2 and CF4 court fees. |
| HAa13 |
15 × 2.5 mm
Colour: black, blue, violet. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CF2 court fees. |
| HAa14 |
14 × 3 mm
Note: This may include more than one type, but these cannot be separated until clearer strikes are available for study.
Colour: black, blue, violet. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CF2 and CF3 court fees, Republican RV5A revenues and KT3 special adhesives. On stamped papers: Imperial court fees, Republican revenues. |
| HAa15 |
Typographed, 12 × 2 mm (Brinkley T2f)
Colour: black, red. On adhesives: Imperial revenues, Republican revenues . |
| HAa16 |
Typographed, 11 × 2 mm (Brinkley T2g)
Colour: black, red?. On adhesives: Imperial revenues, Republican revenues . |

| HBa1A |
42 × 6 mm; frame rectangular, with alternating dots and lines, 55.5 × 21 mm; "Raja" and "stan" separated by Ashokan capital.
Note: I have seen a few examples with the frame almost or completely missing.
Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues.
|
| HBa1 |
30 × 7 mm; frame rectangular, 38 × 13 mm (Brinkley H4a)
Colour: blue, violet. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CC5 copying fees and CF2 court fees. On stamped papers: Alwar type 22, Alwar court fees ovpt.ed on revenues type 22, Imperial court fees and revenues, Republican revenues and SPRV6C provisional. |
| HBa1a |
29 × 6 mm; frame rectangular, 33 × 12 mm
Note: I have seen one example in which the inscription measures 31mm; I think this is due to a damaged handstamp, as the "n" of "Rajasthan" is touching the right frame line. In worn examples much of the frame may be missing. This type is very similar to HBa2, but the inscription is much closer to the top frame line than to the bottom; in HBa2 the inscription is set equally between them.
Colour: blue, violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |
| HBa2 |
27.5 × 7 mm; frame rectangular, 32 × 13 mm (Brinkley H4b)
Colour: red, violet. On adhesives: Imperial court fees, Republican CF3 court fees. On stamped papers: Imperial court fees and revenues. |

Colour: violet. On stamped papers: Republican revenues. |

23 × 5 mm; frame rectangular, 31 × 14 mm
Colour: blue, violet. On adhesives: Imperial court fees; the same or a very similar overprint occurs on Republican CF3 court fees. On stamped papers: Imperial court fees. |

K&M and Brinkley's article. I thank Anil Kumar for pointing out the
correct spelling. The translation is "Government of Rajasthan Service". Sa
